چکیده

In April 2003, UCLA researchers conducted test run T466 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center with their newly designed electromagnetic calorimeter towers composed of tungsten powder and scintillating fibers. The prototype’s energy resolution, uniformity of response, and linearity were measured using an electron beam with a momentum of up to 10 GeV. The measured energy resolution was 17%/ √ E. This report will summarize the basic concepts of high energy calorimetry, suggest possible methods to improve resolution, and propose quality control methods to test improved towers.

DETECTING AND TRIGGERING ON NEUTRONS USING THE SPACAL Pb - SCINTILLATING FIBER CALORIMETER

We present an application of the SPACAL spaghetti calorimeter prototype 1; 2) in the CERN hyperon beam experiment WA89. First results on the performance of the upgraded SPACAL calorimeter in a high rate experimental environment are presented. In order to reconstruct invariant masses from ? hyperons in nal states, the energy of the decay neutrons and their impact point have to be determined with...

Design of a 22 Scintillating Tile Package for the Sdc Barrel Electromagnetic Tile/fiber Calorimeter

We describe R&D results on optical properties of a scintillating tile//ber system for the SDC barrel electromagnetic calorimeter. The tile//ber system uses a wavelength shifting ber to readout the signal of a scintillating plate (tile) and a clear ber to transmit the signal to a phototube. In the SDC calorimeter design, four of tile//ber systems are grouped as a 22 tile package so that the gap ...

A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with planes of 45×10×3 mm plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype’s performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy

CALICE Si/W electromagnetic calorimeter prototype, first testbeam results

A highly granular electromagnetic calorimeter prototype based on tungsten absorber and sampling units equipped with silicon pads as sensitive devices for signal collection is under construction. The full prototype will have in total 30 layers and be read out by about 10000 Si cells of 1 × 1 cm. A first module consisting of 14 layers and depth of 7.2 X0 at normal incidence, having in total 3024 ...

An engineering prototype of the Imaging Calorimeter for ACCESS (ICA)

The Imaging Calorimeter for ACCESS (Advanced Cosmic-ray Composition Experiment for Space Station) is one of several proposed concepts for the ACCESS calorimeter instrument designed to measure the spectrum of protons, helium and heavier nuclei up to ~10 eV. This design utilizes a carbon target and high atomic number absorber sampled by thin layers of scintillating fibers. An engineering prototyp...
